Wilber, Ken: Up From Eden

Keynotes

Foreword to 1996 Edition:

  • in 70ies evoution was applied onto all domains but mind
  • Hegel, Aurobindo, de Chardin didn’t look at anthropological evidence
  • Gebser and Habermas therefore had no stage above the rational
  • framework of „Eden“ as valid as ever
  • antievolutionary remarks taken very seriously here
  • distinction between good news & bad news; the more good new, the more bad news can appear
  • 1. dialectic of progress; 2. differentiation vs. Dissociation; 3. transcendence vs. Repression; 4. natural & pathological hierarchy; 5. high structures, hijacked by low impulses
  • foraging: 10 % slavery; 37 % bride price; 58 % frequent warfare
  • agrarian: 54 % slavery; 64 % bride price;
  • horticultural: 99 % frequent warfare
  • not back to acorn-ness but find obstacles to oaks

Preface:

  • Plotinus: Beasts – Man – God à man is mortal and aware of his mortality
  • each new evolutionary step had new dangers; usually theories either support only good or bad news
  • both views are correct
  • number of cited authorities at minimum: Cambell; Becker & Brown; Jean Gebser; L.L. Whyte; Neumann
  • based on perennial philosophy, developmental logic
  • no sophisticated sociological theory but should serve as Great Picture of consciousness evolution
  • eras: average structure of consciousness

Introduction

  • nothing can stay long removed from God
  • Sagan, Whitehead: history going somewhere
  • why evolution, for what purpose history?
  • Scientism, positivism: meaning does not exist
  • theology: pact betweed God and man
  • unfortunately God = ontological other, not epistemological orther
  • more sophisticated theologians (philosophia perennis): God no Daddy, no mere faith, experience counts
  • God = structure of consciousness à history = unfolding of human consciousness

The Great Nest

  • ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny
  • ego à fall of man
  • development that is envelopment
  • God psychological other

The Atman Project

  • infinity = spaceless
  • eternal = timeless
  • above all else each person desires Atman; above all else it fears loss of separate self

The Nature of Culture and the Denial of Death

  • death denial through substitute gratifications
  • world of substitute gratifications = world of culture

Three Questions

  • what are the major forms of transcendence
  • what substitutes are created
  • costs of substitutes

I. Tales of Dim Eden

1. The Mysterious Serpent

  • 3 mio – 200 000 years ago, Homo Erectus, Homo Habilis, Australopithecus Africanus
  • mammals - man
  • ontogeny recapitulation of cosmic phylogeny
  • soul still sleeps
  • lack of separation or distinction
  • ego was material, unity with matter - often confused with unio mystica
  • no mystical unity because unity with mind, soul, spirit is missing
  • self-contained, narcissistic
  • unconscious nature, physiology, instincts, perception, sensation, emotions
  • prior to reason, logic
  • bliss of ignorance, prepersonal slumber
  • nevertheless transcend and include lower stages of perception
  • uroboros = eden = prerational
  • eden was in a time before time, a story before history
  • eden = world as our ancestors saw it
  • in Christianity fall is being blessed on Saturday à fall wasn’t bad but necessary step out of animistic consciousness

The Human Potential

  • deep structures are universal, surface structures are historical
  • evolution is en-folding of pre-given universal deep structures
  • telos = drive towards realisation of ultimate deep structure (nondual)
  • spectrum of deep structures like Kundalini
  • Kundalini ends with level 5, Nirmanakaya class of religious experience
  • no heroes

II. Times of the Typhon

2. The Ancient Magicians

  • 200 000 years ago, Neanderthal, Cro-Magnon
  • hunters, gatherers, magicians
  • bodyself à symbol = typhon, youngest child of Gaea, half man, half animal
  • man awakens to his vulnerability
  • self must be defended against thanatos
  • self was separated from natural world and became central to it
  • difficulty of distinguishing subject/object, whole/part, image/symbol/paleosymbol from external reality à subject is “in” the object and vice versa
  • parataxic mode
  • no language yet
  • conceptual mind not developed yet
  • self not differentiated from body (only from environment)  fused & confused
  • pictures had magical purpose

When the Dream was Real

  • first centering of self
  • totem
  • pars pro toto
  • vodoo
  • telepathy
  • law of similarity: one stupid woman red hair à all red haired women stupid
  • law of contagion: rabbit brings luck à paw of rabbit brings luck too
  • art = magic = attemtping to influence on external reality by manipulating pictures
  • rituals are formed
  • no strict dividing line between man & man, nature, animal
  • self of lower stage becomes part of the self of higher stage  conscious self of lower stage becomes unsconscious part of conscious self of higher stage

The Magical Bodyself vs. Actual Psychic Ability

  • danger, taboo, superstition
  • Freud confused magic & psychic

3. The Twilight Dawn of Death

  • wherever there is boundary, there is fear; wherever there is other, there is fear
  • where there is self, there is death à denial of death à immortality strivings (based on right intuition of eternal timelessness)
  • neurotic fear (mental illness, neurotic guilt, defense mechanisms) & existential fear (unavoidable, inherent in self-ness) were long identified and repressed
  • fear must be repressed, otherwise organism can’t function properly
  • increasing self - differentiation à increasing existential fear for typhon à Atman Project was intensified à death denial intensified
  • Eros: drive to cosmocentrism applied to “self” à desire to possess the All

Time as Death Denial

  • death = having no future
  • time = substitute for eternity
  • 1. uroboros = pretemporal; 2. present of typhon; 3. cyclic sesanal time of myth; 4. linear time of mental ego; 5-6. archetyp., aeonic, transcendent time of soul; 7-8. timeless Spirit
  • time ticket to immortality
  • uroboros was livin in present, no future  death denial when present is being maintained (typhon had self-sense, image-self  death denial when self-sense being maintained  great Hunt, temporal preservation
  • Hegel: “history is what man does with death”
  • typhon: gatherers, hunters, small groups, lived day to day
  • Cro-Magnon Man higher typhon 50 000 – 10 000 B.C.
  • Neanderthal 200 000 – 50 000
  • living until tommorow = immortality
  • death ascribed to magic

The Prop of Culture

·          Chardin: “complexification of consciousness” à cultural activities

·          more mana (Eros), less taboo (Thanatos)

·          culture was what was done with time

·          magical compensation:

o         ritual, rites, dances, hunting

·          powerful magic à death denial

·          magic defends against death & delivers to others

·          ritual = technique for giving of life à go on in finite realm

·          man = center of concern of universe

·          no war, no ranking, no inequality, no property

·          people still aren’t objects to each other à Atman Project are not worked out on others yet

4. Voyage into the Superconscious

·          Shaman not only psychotic

·          glimpse into superconscious (Nirmanakaya)

·          sees future of consciousness development

·          trance: escapes death and comes back

·          symbol = bird

Existential Crisis and the Lions’s Roar

·          trans-lation: efforts attempting to maintain given self-system

·          trans-formation: when translation fails either regression or transcendence into new structures of consciousness

·          failed translation goes hand in hand with crisis à crisis chance to either grow or regress

·          evolution is succession of shifts via transformation

The End of the Atman Project

·          finding Atman à project dies down

·          therefore self must be sacrificed

·          intuiting that sacrifice is necessary to find Spirit à sacrifice rituals are performed (securing Eros, translation or self-ness) as substitute for the sacrifice of the self

·          Shaman sacrifices his self à finds Nirmanakaya

·          difference between Atman & Atman Project = sacrifice of self v.s. sacrifice of substitutes (finger, pigs, humans) = esoteric v.s. exoteric Religion

Shamanic Voyage

·          Nirmanakaya (psychic), Samboghakaya (subtle) and Dharmakaya (causal) – class of religious experience

·          Shaman glimpses into Nirmanakaya – class

·          first master of kundalini / hatha yoga

The Passing of Magic

·          magic in us as defence mechanism

·          typhon was tender fall out of Eden, it is to become worse in Palelithis and Mesolithic Era

III. Mythic Membership

5. Future Shock

·          around 10 000 B.C. greatest revolution in history ever

·          farming à world of farming = world of extended time

·          was only possible because of language

·          language expression of conceptual mind

·          conceptual mind goes hand in hand with expanded awareness of time

·          living for the future new Atman Project

The Skull Grins In

·          man apprehended his mortality more vividly

·          ceremonial graves (although rudimentarily dating into typhon)

·          language à mental self was formed out of bodyself (1.environmental self 2. bodyself 3. mental self)

Language, Time, and Membership

·          first great accomodations of people (50 to 50 000)

·          comm-unity only possible because of language

·          Castaneda: man is told how to perceive the world à growth into mythic membership

·          language = vehicle of time and temporal representation

·          Egypt, Babylon, Sumer, Aztec-Mayan Mexico, Shang China, Indus Valley, Mycenaean Crete

·          mental realm is new realm transcending material realm (representing it) and presenting new realm à representational & presentational

The Symbolate World

·          physical (food), biological (sex) and now additionaly cultural (mind) reproduction

·          concrete operational thinking  you need not drag a tree but simply represent it with symbols (money, gold)

Money and Surplus

·          symbolical representation of material goods as well as labour à easier trade & wages

·          additionally plow à surplus à consciousness needn’t care about material realms that much à Atman Project was applied onto culture (maths, calendar,…)

The Atman Project in Farming Consciousness

·          every stage step towards Spirit & enfolding of Atman Project

·          money = mana à becomes new death denial, powerful symbol of immortatliy à the more money, the more life à Gold new immortality symbol

·          if man is not to find Spirit à farm for it (make money for it) exclusively in time

·          farming = time; time is money; money is death denial

Membership

·          9500 – 4500 low membership

·          4500 – 1500 high membership

·          description of reality (via language) is to become experience of reality à communites are build on descripitions of reality; description of reality = unity of mythic comm-unity

The Bicameral Mind

·          language à bicameral mind

·          individual person (ego) rests upon, grows out of membership

·          transcripitional analysis (TA) à thinking equals voices in your head à ideas of great religions arose out of bicameral mind

·          this theory cannot account for all religious experiences

6. The Great Mother

·          prepersonal slumber and transcendence are fun, personality in between horror

·          self either dissolves into transcendence or regresses

·          each new stage of structural evolution = substitute for god

New Realizations, New Horrors

·          the more man became to differentiate, the more went wrong

·          Egypt:  attempt to deny death mythologically; king was strong character but mad, imagined his temporal character to be god himself

·          à madness but also monumental growth in consciousness (because of strong character)

·          look at mythology: deeper realisations took place; but: horrors increased too – sacrifice

The Great Mother

·          Great Mother = natur. histor. aspect (prerational, subconscious)

·          transcendental, mystical aspect = Great Goddess (transrational)

·           baby: till 6th month uroboric unity, “projective identification”; till 18th month subj/obj. nearly fully, till 36th fully resolved à separation from Great Mother à G.M. reactions crucial

·          G.M. dominates uroboros & peaks in early myth

·          fear, extinction, overthrow, dissolution cantered around G.M.

·          Palaeolithic caves show images of G.M.

·          G.M. first object of worship of Species Sapiens

·          as early myth awakens man awakens to what G.M. really wants: sacrifice of blood and

Sacrifice: The Core of Member Mythology

·          early man didn’t know relation between birth & sexuality

·          lunar cycle = menstrual cycle; moon dies to resurrect in three days

·          when menstrual blood was not to appear à birth

·          à Great Mother (earth) wants blood and a consolant (moon) to be scarified in order to give life

·          G.M. = virgin; son is his own father therefore;

·          before Mary there was Damuzi & Inanna, Tamuz & Ishtar, Osiris & Isis

·          first great ritual was ritual of blood sacrifice

·          if you want life, beg it with blood

·          earliest kings sacrificed themselves

·          civilisations and sacrifice came into being together

The Ritual Sacrifice

·          temporal self was to be promised eternal (long) existence

·          self was cosmocentric

The Struggling Self

·          G.M. prevented truly strong personality; see: all mythology of individuals trying to become independent of G.M. were to die

·          one remains “momma’s boy”

·          self was not strong enough to detach ifself from moter nature

7. The Great Goddess

·          representative of true Divinity

·          exists in and at different spheres of the Great Nest of Being

True Sacrifice

·          same ceremonies for Great Mother & Great Goddess but:

·          can be interpreted eso- or exoterically à literally or symbolically à literal blood sacrifice or symbolic ego sacrifice

·          self-sacirifice à community with Great Goddess

The Sambhogakaya Vision: Subtle Oneness

·          high priests and furthest developed individuals experienced Sambhogakaya

·          proto-Oneness à Polytheism was to be replaced by one Goddess (Monotheism)

·          if “esoteric” is to mean highest developed way of interpretation à least wide spread

Two Strands of Evolution:

·          average mode of consciousness was outdone by most advanced: à when average was at stage 2, 3, 4 most advanced was at 5, 6, 7/8

Kundalini:

·          serpent motif was used either to symbolize evil (when serpent was combined with earth) or god (when pointing to the air)

·          Kundalini: 1.earth, matter, food; 2/3. emotion, sexuality, power; 4. love, belongingness; 5. verbal knowledge & self reflexiveness; 6. psychic realm; 7. higher transcendence, Oneness

Conclusions: Great Mother v.s. Great Goddess

·          mother image = dependance on nature = Great Mother

·          mother, maya, measure, menstrual, meter… all from sanskrit ma/matr = production

·          interact and tangentially support each other to some degree: à subtle experience was similar to magic; causal

·          even experiences of the highest stage were formulated in language of the average man

·          murder was born in myth consciousness; in typhon murder almost nonexistent

·          sacrifice from finger to humans to nations, when symbolic meaning is mistaken with literal one

8. The Mythology of Murder

Homicide: A New Form of Substitute Sacrifice

·       absolute reality = shunyata = void = no-thing

·       eros = ontological hunger

·       human aggression was born

·       only man kills out of hatred

·       coyote loves the animal it kills as we love ice-cream

·       either kill as immortality project or kill your self

·       murder is new way to magically avoid death

Murder in Mythology

·       Maki ceremonials, Melanesian island of Malekula

·       up to 500 pigs a day were sacrificed

·       those pigs were worth gold as immortality symbol

·       death comes as murder

The War Machine – Sacrifice Run Riot

·       all men & women intuit that skull will grin in

·       what is at stake in war is ones own Atman Project

·       3000 B.C.E – Sumer, early city states of Ur, Uruk, Kish, Lagash: modern warfare was born

·       this is only the beginning, in mental egoic consciousness it became worse

·       war served the cultural Atman Project to make egos into gods

·       for every one year of peace have been 14 years of war

·       war & money easily accessible immortality symbols, you need not being a genius to fight

9. Polis and Praxis

·       polis = city-state = higher form of shared human community

·       only possible because of language

·       arena of membership-self

·       techne = manipulation of subhuman goods

·       praxis = activity in polis

·       praxis was reduced to techne

·       culture, verbal learning, beginning of history

·       transcend & include stages & integrate them otherwise: neurosis

·       mythic self is compound individual of previous levels of evolution

·       noble savage knows only sex & food

·       state's potential for good matches potential for brutality

·       various systems of exchange and their masters:

·       Marx (1), Freud (2), Socrates (3), Hobbes (4), Patanjali (5), Kirpal Singh (6), Buddha, Krishna, Christ (7/8)

·       institution of kingship

Divine Kingship

·       first signs in low membership 9000  B.C.E; Eynan; flourished in higher membership

·       phenomenon of unequaled impact

·       surplus given to king

·       an elite accumulated wealth of the many

·       material exploitation & oppression

·       the first kings were gods

·       consorts of Great Mother à they were sacrificed

·       they were not gods but god-figures (as politicians are)

·       kings abandoned ritual of being sacrificed: Sumer priests were sacrificed instead

·       massive warfare

·       slavery, exploitation, elitist class-distionction, massive oppression

·       king was in position to fulfil wildest fantasies, control over immortality symbols of community

·       early temples first banks

The Psychological Function of The King

·       man wanted living god

·       people have demanded oppression

·       secured prosperity, communal unity, projection of shadow

·       king = first egoic self

·       man needs god-figure

·       clan consciousness transformed into state consciousness

IV. The Solar Ego

10. Something Unheard Of

·       2000 – 1000 B.C.E. Egoic structure of consciousness arose

·       tracking average mode of self

·       2500 – 500 low; 500 – 1500 C.E. Middle; 1500 C.E. - present high egoic membership

·       rearrangement of society, philosophy, religion, politics

·       Gebser marks it with the apperance of the Iliad; Jaynes with Odyssey; - people we can understand with little difficulty

·       increase in capacity for destructive and evil activities

·       science, philosophy, self-reflection, thought itself becomes object of awareness

·       ego vengeance against body, nature, cosmos

·       ego in imagining success began to remake the cosmos in its own image

Ego Birth: A Mythological Look

·       entirely different form of myth begins to emergence

·       individual triumphs over the Great Mother in mythology: hero mythology

·       patriarchy

·       myth of monster that is slain (Great Mother) and guards the treasure of „ego“

·       step from im- to personal

·       power to discipline the will and mold the personality

·       selfconsciousness was born

Mythic Dissociation

·       ego depressed Great Mother – blind arrogance

·       in the East techniques for transformation but masses of people pre-egoic communal values

·       revaluation of the feminine begins

11. The Slaying of the Typhon

·       alienation from nature & body

·       dissociation into mind/body

·       Whyte: homo has two capacities: live in present or in his memory

·       imbalance of those two arose with ego-consciousness

·       European dissolution: reason & instincts are at war

·       Whyte: „for now, if ever, is the fall of man“ (1600 – 400 B.C.E.)

A Legend in its own Mind

·       many of the egoic activities are based on the past

·       ego = in part memory-self

·       immature intellect: plays back records & causes Europ. Dissolution

·       mature intellect: creative

·       Krishnamurti while criticizing memory overlooks pre/trans-memory

·       ego new substitute self, in search for fixed, stable entities

·       thoughts promise eternity

12. A New Time, a New Body

·       new form of time: linear, conceptual, historical (first historical records, 1300 B.C.E, Herodot father of historical record: 500 B.C.E.)

·       new form of body: devitalized, deformed

The Discovery of History

·       mythical was seasonal, cyclic – no guilt, memory; e.g. New year celebrations, sins were wiped out; where ignorance is, there is wisdom

·       temp. Oriented mythology was born (birth of time, sin, fall and work of restoration)

·       power-drives accumulated

·       body referent of seasonal, mind of hist. Time

·       suicidal project of attack on body

·       man awareness of death – more time was needed

·       first histories: chronicles of the ego's accomplishments

A New Body

·       sacred gods of one stage are to become devils of the next

·       Sorcerer of Trois freres reminds of devil-images from egoic stages

·       East had integrated Satan as lower manifestations of God

·       hypergenital sexuality, hedonism, hyperintellectualism

·       dissociated ego caused obsession of sex & violence

·       vital shock (Adi Da, Aurobindo)

·       greece: „the body, tomb“

13. Solarisation

·          body à mind = earth à heaven (apollinic heaven) = darkness à light

·          matriarchy à patriarchy

·          why?

Ontogenetic Clues

·          why patriarchy?

·          feminists say: opression

·          male historians: matriarchy was instinctive, subhuman

·          typhon - both sexes equal relation towards Great Mother

o         pre oedipal, pre verbal

o         father was not important

·          ego – circumstantial mother

·          individual

·          verbal

·          egoic

·          dyad (typhon, Great Mother) -> triad (father, mother, child)

·          child is left out

·          when person awakens to sexuality, it awakens to itself as “half-person”

·          in Plato and Genesis separation of sexes connected with fall

·          child is left out

o         higher order unity with mind

o         father, mother imagee into ego

o         stronger ego

·          chtonic Great Mother gives way to mental femininity

·          superego: necessary for ego, but harsh injunctions, prohibitions -> pride & guilt

A Hint from Mythology

·          body = earth; mind = heaven;

·          earth ruled by Great Mother, heaven by mental femininity/masculinity

·          but heaven was ruled by masculine only, why?

Away From the Chtonic

·          Great Mother vegetal, dark, animal, humid

·          Greek Persepohne & Demeter cults remind of cruelties in Africa

·          Great Mother responsible for dismemberment

·          Hysteria as synonym to Aphrodisia

The New Mentality

·          more dominated by mental masculine

·          treasure hard to attain usually represented by feminine figure

·          fem/masculine must be released from chtonic Mother

·          princess = higher, solar femininity

·          but we have only sons of heaven, why?

The Natural Patriarchy

·          not only sexist reason for patriarchy

·          male sexism + female conpliance

·          the more you grow -> the less male/female

·          emotional intuition is not spiritual intuition

·          all human culture is masculine in character

·          mother figures equal in all times, father figures different from culture to culture

·          reptilian stam (uroboros); limbic stam (typhon); neocortex (ego-mind)

The Unnatural Patriarchy

·          first hero therefore male

·          Jew’s daily prayer of thanking at not having been born woman

·          feminine principle was denied sociocultural communication

·          Europ. dissociation -> repression of feminine

·          feminine threat to ego

·          Adam divided into Eve & Jr.

·          bisexual

·          falls into sexes

·          both don’t work, cultivate

§          woman’s fault of seducing Jr.

§          “husband shall rule over thee”

§          Adam was punish for listening to Eve

Patriarchial Immortality

·          kinghship -> man began to imitate kings

·          children & woman were his property

·          feminine threatened masculine mentality & egoic immortality -> had to be repressed

Sol Invictus

·          Sun Gods

o         enlightenment

·          Hero = Ego = Mind = Heaven = Light = Sun

o         reborn as victorious Sun, sol invuctus

Oedipus

·          loves his mother, kills his father

·          he chooses Great Mother instead of mind

·          same fate as all consorts of Great Mother

o         blinds himself

o         loss of sight symbolic for loss of knowledge, wisdom

·          but all this is subconscious, Oedipus does not know that he marries his mother

·          if unity through mind fails -> Oedipus complex, from Sphinx to Man

14. I And the Father are One

§          we look at most advanced mode second strand of evolution

§          axial sages aroung 600 B.C.E. Buddha & Lao Tzu

§          Sambhogakaya religion: one communicates with the One

§          Dharmakaya religion: one becomes the One

Mosaic and Christic Revelation

§          Sambhogakaya was religion of Moses, Abraham, Isaac, Jacob

§          Aton first monotheistic god (Egypt 1372-54)

§          Moses brought Aton to Sinai, Sambhogakaya to Nirmanakaya, local volcano god “Yahweh” took his name; Moses eventually killed

§          Jesus brought Dharmakaya to people -> crucified

§          gnostic texts -> assumed that Jesus had esoteric teaching

§          Jesus did not claim to be the only son of God

§          Dharmakaya religion:

o         self one with God

o         illusion & enlightenment

o         spiritual guide but no lord

§          circle of gnostic disciples: John, Mary, Magdalena, Theudas, Marcion, Valentinus

§          demiurgos lesser divine being (6)

§          emptiness = seamless, not featureless

§          such wisdom never took official root in the West

o         how go beyond god?

o         god beyond god meant end of power of banker-priests

§          Zen: best of Buddha & Lao-Tzu was combined & preserved

§          yogis (5), saints (6), sage (7/8)

The Evolution of Spiritual Experience

o         in meditation one goes from stage 5 to 8 in the present

o         ontogeny recapitulates phylogeny therefore future evolution will likely follow path of most advanced beings to now

Paternal Images

o         the god of the masses was projection of paternal superego as Great Mother was symbol of nature

o         crucifiction symbolizes ego-death

o         Godhead not a mere projection à otherwise there would be no difference between Christ/Buddha

o         why are there universal announcements of ultimate transcendent ground? – this projection cannot answer

o         new dragon of today is ego, centaur is new treasure, hard to attain

15. On Becoming a Person

Exchange Distortion

·       human = compound individual

·       higher rests upon lower but not caused or const. By lower

·       becauser higher transcends lower it can repress it

·       lower can infect higher: 1. erupt and thus disrupt higher functioning; 2. pass distortion to the higher

·       most egoic repressions is self-repression

·       internalized oppression = surplus repression

·       ego: superego important for its development: ideals; goals; desires; rules; assertions; pride; conscience; prohibitions – guilt

·       with rise of polis levels of being could be exteriorly repressed

·       polis also internal repression

Some Reconstructions

·       higher comes through but not from the lower

·       distortion of lower causes similiar dist. in higher

·       individual can repress any of his levels of exchange

·       external ind. Can also repress any level of exchange of others

·       Marx: alienation of labor; Freud: alienation of consciousness

·       Freud: early psychoanalysis was fun

A Real Person

·       ego – new level of exchange

·       identity of self-consciousness has developped

·       self esteem is not self assertion

·       praxis cannot be reduced to techne

·       ego: property & law & respect for personhood

·       father first owner of personal property

·       person was his own property, could not become slave

·       each I had its own „me, I , mine“

·       unfortunately not extended to more people

·       person – recongnized in process of esteem

·       persona = actor's role – slave to riman law had no personalityreal person: 1. own property; 2. author of own actions; 3. existed as sys. Of exchange of recognition + esteem

The Shadow

·       unwanted, feared personae

·       subconscious persona = secret face

·       hides those aspects of communicatibe exch. Which threaten ego

·       shadow linked to hermeneutical concearn, no empirical decisions

·       shadow is not id (emotional, sexual energy, typhon)

·       central core of any meaningful psychotherapy = hermeneutical interpretation

·       recovering past memories – remember the past or we'll be doomed to repeat it

·       goal of exist./humanistic therapy = becoming a person

·       ego does not recognize itself as but one moment in a much lager arc of evolution

·       to be a real person = avoiding superconsciousness

·       psychological era = era of fixated ego

Guilt, Time & Aggression

·       'death' impact – death terror turned out in death dealing

·       death, guilt, time three sides of exist. Terror

·       different structures of guild – different structures of time

·       the more you can rob others of immortality, the greater grows your account

Summary:

·       expanded potentials: possession of rational compr., self-reflexiveness; grasp of hist. Time

·       fears: guilt, death

·       egoic Atman project can exploit: 1. mat. Exchange; 2. Emotional sexual exchange; 3. verbal exchange; 4. egoic self-esteem

·       euqlity is beyond ego!!!

·       man has property of own person – defend himself, save his face

16. The Dawn of Misery

·       exclusive identification with the ego is the cage

·       ego – man became too aware of his misery

·       in literature first laments about 'evil' humanity

·       1. man aware of moral conflict & guilt; 2. surplus repression – surplus guilt; 3. aware of alienation; 4. hybris, pride that goeth before a fall

Summary: The Fall

  • man/woman already alienated from Spirit
  • awakening (factor 3), natural (factor 1) & neurotic guilt (factor 2), guilty pride (factor 4)
  • Fall of Etana (King) – Kish

V. The Context

17. Original Sin

  • not one but two falls

The Scientific Fall

  • fall out of prepersonal realm
  • apprehension of original sin, not original sin itself
  • apple – awakening to responsibility – they walked out, not thrown out
  • humanity fell not down but up into ego
  • evolution gives no answer on WHY smth. occured, only on WHAT
  • scientific fall occurred around 2000 B.C.E.

Involution & Evolution

  • for theological fall we must follow mysticism
  • amnesis of senior – new lower level
  • Spirit is forgotten at each level
  • ground unconscious = Ursprung = higher dimensions in potential form
  • once involution complete – evolution can begin
  • higher comes through the lower
  • universe 15 billion years old – probability figures strained
  • Big Bang = Involution
  • mind (emotion, perception), here evolution rests today
  • holistic thinking – why of evolution collapses
  • anamnesis makes more sense – leaps are explained
  • as long as Eros overweighs Thanatos one sticks at one level
  • lower is created as substitute for the higher
  • since self cannot accept death of level it goes about seeking transcendence – Atman intuition applied on THIS level

Original Sin and the Thelogical Fall

  • Schelling, Coomaraswamy, show Involution exists in philosophia perennis
  • the self is structure of sin
  • the theological fall existed before human. emerged
  • in Eden awareness of original sin was absent
  • creation is not absolutely tied to sin - one can find god in creation too
  • Return to source by transcending lower levels
  • Boddhisattva allows all lower stages to participate in absolute enlightenment
  • theological fall is occuring NOW
  • original sin = multiplicity divorced from unity
  • infants are born into sin

The Relation of the Two Falls

  • scientific fall + awareness of theological fall historically at roughly same time
  • early theologians tended to confuse those falls
  • therefore belief in historical silliness was postulated
  • scientific & theol. fall fully compatible

Comparisons

  • Aurobindo, Radhakrishnan, Chaudhuri, Gopi Krishna
  • Chardin, Hegel, Fichte, Schelling
  • Beryaev
  • Eros – Thanatos – higher order synthesis = thesis – antithesis – synthesis

18. In Prospectus: The Future

  • new: distinction between average & most adv. Mode of consciousness
  • note: we have skipped centaur & Svabhavikakaya – levels
  • meditation does it all
  • meditate – you do something for evolution
  • majority of scientists would rather agree with Compte
  • we agree too, but go further (stages 5-8)
  • many confuse magic with psychic; myth with subtle
  • cease confusing medium stage of consciousness with most advanced mode & look again at history
  • New Age often regresses into prepersonal cultic, narcissistic pursuits
  • Dharma Bum, prepersonal masses pointed to guys like Krishnamurti, Maharshi, Zen
  • intellectual curiosity + comprehension & practice
  • future: some tales
  • pre/trans are nonegoic – confusion
  • classic confusion started by Freud is stage 1 with 7/8
  • we are no near 'beyond reason' cause we are no near 'universal reason' yet

19. Republicans, Democrats, and Mystics

  • multidisciplinary analysis of logic of levels of exchange
  • unified social theory: subj., object. + nondual world
  • central problem of social + pol. Theories: 'why men/women unfree?'
  • either subjective (Republicans) or objective (Democrats) reasons are given
  • complementary approaches
  • no 'free self' (exists only in words) – wherever there is other, there is fear
  • self-sense illusory + product of boundary – death complex illusion
  • 1st question (from the beginning) refers to mystic trancendence; 2nd to subjective desires; 3rd to objective repression/oppression
  • the more Atman, the less Atman project
